Bear Canyon in Red and Black — the boot that started it all, in its original colours. This is the very first style we ever made, and this red-and-black combination is the one it was born in. Genuine black ostrich leg wraps the foot in bold, scaled exotic texture, while rich red leather rises through it in flame cut-outs and climbs the shaft, where a hand-cut floral inlay in black blooms up the leg like the tall grass of an open field.

Ostrich leg is unmistakable. The raised, reptilian-like scales come from the lower leg of the bird, and because each animal yields so little, it is both rare and prized — tough, characterful and completely unlike any smooth leather. Every skin is different, so no two pairs of Bear Canyon are ever exactly alike.

Set on a classic pointed toe and a stacked western heel, with a tall, leg-lengthening shaft, Bear Canyon is pure handcrafted Western style — frontier-tough, exotic and made to last a lifetime, for anyone who values objects that are made well and only get better with age.


Why “Indian Paintbrush” We call this original colourway Indian Paintbrush — after the fiery wildflower that scatters its brilliant red across the Montana hillsides every summer. Set against deep black, that same untamed red feels alive and a little rebellious: a wildflower that refuses to be quiet, captured in a boot.

The original — and still going after 25 years
Bear Canyon is the very first style I designed, while hiking the trails around our home in Montana, and red and black are its original colours. It is where Rockies Rebels began. I still wear my own pair — the same pair, after twenty-five years. If you ever find me out on the road or on a horseback ride, chances are these are the boots on my feet. That is the whole promise of Rockies Rebels in one pair: made so well, and loved so much, that they last a lifetime.

    Fun fact: ostrich leg, a rare exotic

    Ostrich is one of the world's most coveted exotic leathers, and ostrich leg is its rarest, most dramatic cut. Unlike the famous round quill bumps of the body, the leg has a bold, scaled, almost reptilian texture — the part of the bird that walked the earth, so it is naturally tough and hard-wearing. Each ostrich provides only a small amount of it, which is exactly why a boot in ostrich leg is such a rare and collectible thing

     

    How to wear it

    Red and black is bold, confident and surprisingly easy: wear Bear Canyon with blue or black denim and a white tee to let the boot lead, with a little black dress for real drama, or with tan and cream to soften the red. This is a boot made to be seen — and made to be lived in.

    Craftsmanship

    Designed in Montana and handmade in Italy, each pair features a premium leather lining and cushioned insole. Every boot is entirely handmade, with particular care taken over the sole — hand-built and hand-finished for lasting comfort and durability. We use tree resin instead of chemical glue and cork filling for support, so your feet stay dry and comfortable. Each pair is stitched and tooled by hand — frontier-tough boots that conform to the wearer over time and become more beautiful with every year.

     

    A rare, collectible edition Just 16 pairs of this style will ever be made. We craft in deliberately small runs — each colour its own little edition — so the boots you choose stay rare and personal. They are made to be collected, never mass-produced; and as any true boot lover knows, there is no such thing as too many beautiful pairs in the closet.
