A pair of exotic leather boots is an investment — and, cared for properly, one that only grows more beautiful with age. Python, alligator, stingray, ostrich, lizard and eel each have their own personality, and each likes to be looked after a little differently. Here is a simple, no-fuss guide to keeping your handmade Italian western boots looking incredible for years. (For our full care overview, see the Care page.)

The golden rules for every exotic skin

  • Store them with cedar boot trees or rolled tissue inside to hold their shape, away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Let them rest a day between wears so the leather can breathe and recover.
  • Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after each wear; never soak exotic leather or machine-dry it.
  • Use a reputable exotic-leather conditioner sparingly, a few times a year — never ordinary shoe polish, which can clog the scales.

Python

Python scales lift slightly and have a natural grain direction. Always wipe with the scales (from head to tail), never against them, so they lie flat. A light exotic conditioner keeps the scales supple and prevents lifting. Keep python dry — it does not love rain.

Alligator

Alligator is the most durable of the exotics and the easiest to keep — a soft cloth and an occasional conditioner keep the tiles glossy. Its natural oils do most of the work; over-conditioning can dull the shine, so less is more.

Stingray

Stingray is naturally water- and scratch-resistant thanks to its beaded surface, so it is the toughest of the group. A damp cloth lifts most marks. It rarely needs conditioning — an occasional buff is enough to keep it sparkling.

Ostrich, lizard & eel

Ostrich is rich in natural oils and stays supple for decades; condition lightly to feed it. Lizard has small tight scales — wipe with the grain and condition sparingly. Eel is silky and delicate; a soft dry cloth and gentle handling keep its liquid sheen. For all three, keep them dry and away from heat.
