A memory of mine
Alligator is my favourite leather, and my attachment to it is personal. When I was little, I remember admiring my grandmother and my mother walking through the city on a Sunday afternoon, taking me to the main square for a gelato or a hot cocoa. They carried the most beautiful handbags in crocodile and alligator — my grandmother’s in a deep burgundy, my mother’s in black — paired with their long mink furs. They looked so beautiful, so elegant. As a teenager I begged to borrow one, and for years the answer was no. Then, one evening, on my way to a very special dinner, my mother finally let me wear my grandmother’s. I have never forgotten it. Real alligator has tell-tale signs. The tiles are soft and slightly domed, larger across the belly and growing smaller toward the sides; the pattern is beautifully symmetrical but never machine-perfect, because each skin is hand-cut and matched by eye. You’ll often see subtle natural variation from one boot to its pair — a sign of the real thing. If a “croc” pattern looks perfectly uniform and endlessly repeating, it is almost certainly embossed cowhide, not genuine alligator.
