How to recognise real lizard — and a high-quality skin
Genuine lizard is easy to love and worth knowing how to spot. Real lizard has small, fine scales that are slightly irregular — never machine-perfect — arranged in natural rows along a distinct ridge that runs down the centre of the skin, with the scales growing smaller toward the edges. The leather is soft and supple, with a gentle, living sheen. An embossed imitation, stamped onto cowhide, gives itself away with a perfectly uniform, endlessly repeating pattern and a stiff, lifeless feel.
Quality then comes down to the scales and the cut. The finest lizard has small, even, tightly-packed scales and is cut so that the natural centre ridge runs straight and symmetrically down the vamp, with the two boots mirrored as a matched pair. On a top-quality boot the scale pattern flows cleanly with no awkward seams through the most visible areas.
